THE KARUNA BALI FOUNDATION
HUMANITARIAN MANAGEMENT
& LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IN BALI
We offer a Living Experience of Leadership, Management and Service through participation in a remarkable, genuine community aid program. An extraordinary opportunity for young people from Western Nations to immerse themselves in a project supporting a College and a Village Education Program in Bali under the care and tutelage of professional facilitators.
Designed for young people, age 17 – 25 to discover who they are and how well they are prepared for life, through the diversity of experiencing another culture - the Karuna Bali culture of Values, Love and Gratitude - to discover who they might become, if they let these qualities guide their lives.
We are now inviting applications from English speaking students from any nation.
Is this something you would like to extend to your son or daughter?
Young people realize the dynamic of their life and explore their resourcefulness through understanding and connecting to their intrinsic values – through this they discover their sense of self worth. INTERESTED? WHAT SHOULD I DO?
First, please read through the following to ensure that our values and ideals are in alignment and acceptable to both parents and the student before proceeding. We welcome any further questions you may have.
We hope that this in-depth message will explain our motivation behind the program, what we hope to achieve for the Karuna Bali Foundation, the International youth program and with for the individual students.
1. Fulfilling Our Vision: For some time we (Karuna Bali Foundation in Ubud, Bali - www.karunabali.com) have desired to establish an Indonesian Humanitarian Leadership program that would take potential young Indonesian leaders to a higher awareness of what they can do to enhance the potential of their own lives and that of their people. To do this means sourcing ongoing funding to allow us to offer scholarships. As you may be aware in the current climate sourcing donations for charitable work is becoming extremely difficult. We decided to see if we had something to offer that would be in alignment with our overall goals, and use the infrastructure of our assets in Bali to provide added value to Karuna Bali, while at the same time providing young people from other nations exposure to the inspiration and experience, to develop any potential humanitarian leadership initiative and potential that they might hold.
From our perspective, we are enormously excited by the opportunity to work with young people from the international community that are poised to be future leaders in Australia and other nations connecting them with others that will result in long-lasting international friendships and through that to continue to expand the Karuna Bali Vision.
2. Our Experience: We looked at the present activities of Karuna Bali and realised that much of what has already been developed there is as relevant and of benefit to young people from privileged backgrounds as it does to our financially challenged Indonesian sponsored short term and one year students. Our 'Reduce Poverty Through Education' philosophy has major benefits for young western people willing to see the how the other part of the world live and value education, deeply value opportunity and who struggle against many disadvantages with great spirit, love and passion.
3. Who Are These Young People: We initiated think tanks, round table planning groups from some of our major sponsors, people in Australia who have world class industry and management experience, who had children in the late High School and pre College/University age group and from those meetings determined that a 'market' existed for an age group who were leaving High School and wanted to take a year off before entering a specific education/training, commonly referred to as a 'gap year'.
Parents interviewed stated that in many cases these young people were showing great potential but had not developed a fixed idea of what they wanted to focus their education toward and they indicated a real interest in having their children engaged in something like our Humanitarian Leadership program as a precursor to making their life choices.
The One Year Student Program, which is the highly successful full time education program we are seeking to expand at Campuhan College, was able to be launched two years ago and is going into it's third year, due entirely to the efforts of two young American High School students who were encouraged to undertake a humanitarian fundraising program by their families, and succeeded now three times in a row, in raising US $10,000. Perfectly demonstrating what is possible when those who have resources, unselfishly seek to aid those who have not.
We believe that there is huge potential here for our vision for young Indonesian people, and if our estimation is correct, there is a fabulous benefit to young people in Australia, USA, Europe, Japan who would also have a priceless opportunity dovetailing with our desire to have the Humanitarian Leadership program become a truly international activity. Uniting young people of all cultures, races and differing backgrounds.
This research indicated that parents were prepared to pay, and often invest an amount similar to what we are charging, to enable their children to travel overseas and take part in leadership and development programs. The criteria being that it must be a specialized program offering their sons or daughters personal supervision, and maximum hands on participation within a small select group, where they were offered direct experience, cultural immersion and a primary criteria of developing leadership skills. The general philosophy being that this type of experience would stand them in good stead for life, enhance their character, deepen their appreciation of further education and/or firmly establish a passion for their life-direction.
4. Creating Ongoing Financial Support to help Others: For the International student there is both the obvious benefit from this program in accelerating the awakening of their potential, and through their participation contributing to those less fortunate in three ways:
a) Creating income for the ongoing operation of Campuhan College programs and the non profit Karuna Bali Foundation - the income being derived from payment for facilitator services of the senior admin personnel and teaching faculty who will interact/instruct the students during their month involvement with the various aspects of Campuhan College and the other Karuna Bali projects, including EduCare and Living Values Education through Computer and English language skills, rural village and underprivileged community development, living values education - under the general curriculum of a Leadership/Management course.
b) Provide towards the Scholarship Fund for Indonesian students to participate along with the overseas students.
c) Through participating with the Indonesians they offer a real insight into how committed western young people (not tourists) think, act and aspire and have through fellowship formed in shared experience and adventure both gain the opportunity for lasting friendships.
5. Supervision: We determined that the mixed nature of this age group during the month in Bali required a high one on one ratio of supervision in order to provide 24 hour supervision by mature men and women. Our job will be to ensure, as far as possible, their personal safety, to provide wholesome meals, a good standard of segregated accommodation, outsource quality adventure activities and cultural immersion experiences, plus manage all the aspects of transport etc.,
6. Assessment: There is a substantial requirement for ensuring we have the right young people with the correct motivation. As each group numbers no more than six we require the highest standard of discipline and dedication. The assessment procedure is strict.
7. The Personal Community Project: As much of the success of the individual will be determined by what they experience with us in Bali and through what they are able to accomplish on their return home, we have created Personal Project Program, whereby they will have the opportunity to undertake, design, fundraise and complete a project of their own. This will be a 'hands on' personal project, undertaken by each student in the program that will enable them to fulfill the potential of their leadership education and fulfill their vision and experience.
To ensure they have a complete experience with tangible outcome each student will be required to nominate a community project and undertake it to completion within the year. Students are accountable for their activity and will be provided with detailed reference and character report, which would be invaluable in any CV. Weekly progress reports will be filed and monitored. Suggestions, resources and on-going motivation is required to maintain momentum to a level that will provide every opportunity for a successful outcome.
Summary: We are not looking for many students, we are looking for quality and the right attitude. It is certainly not projected as a holiday nor a 'fun' month for people seeking a break from school, it will be offered to exceptional young individuals with real potential and full family support, from backgrounds where a philosophy of service and humanitarian ideals are valued.
Action to be taken:
- Contact Raj Miles or Suzanne Stallard, the HML Project Managers at hml@karunabali.com, providing proposed student's name, age, gender, mailing address, email address and telephone.
- Student must attach a letter with photograph stating their interest and describing their motivation for wanting to join the HML program and what they would hope to gain from it.
- Preferred month – with two options.
